GTA VI makes The Game Awards 2026 cutoff by one day
The Game Awards' eligibility window closes on November 20, 2026. GTA VI launches on November 19, so Rockstar's game qualifies for this year's show with a day to spare.

Grand Theft Auto VI will be eligible for The Game Awards 2026, and it gets in with one day to spare. The show's published rules set the cutoff for this year's awards at November 20. GTA VI launches on November 19, 2026, five weeks from today. IGN, Eurogamer, Insider Gaming and GamesRadar+ have all reported the same conclusion.
The wording in The Game Awards' FAQ is plain:
Games must be made commercially available to customers on or before Friday, November 20, 2026, at 9 p.m. PT. In the Players' Voice category, games must ship on or before November 30, 2026.
Neither Rockstar nor The Game Awards has said anything about GTA VI specifically. The eligibility follows from the rules as written. Nominations for this year haven't been announced yet.

Where it could compete
Insider Gaming went through last year's categories and suggests GTA VI could show up in Best in Accessibility, Best Action Game, Best Performance, Best Art Direction, Best Score/Music, Best Audio Design, Best Narrative, Best Game Direction and Game of the Year. That is the outlet's speculation, not a nomination list. The same report names Resident Evil Requiem, Control Resonant, Big Walk, Forza Horizon 6, Mina the Hollower and Pokemon Pokopia as 2026 games whose chances could suffer once GTA VI is in the mix.
GamesRadar+ has its own shortlist. From games already on sale, it expects Saros, Slay the Spire 2 and Resident Evil Requiem to be nominated, and it calls The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake the one to watch against GTA VI. For reference, the record for most wins in a single night belongs to Sandfall Interactive's Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which took nine awards at last year's show.

The one-day margin will invite theories that Rockstar picked its date with the awards in mind. GamesRadar+ isn't convinced, pointing out that the eligibility rules have been in place for years and that reading intent into the timing is probably a stretch. Release dates for a game this size tend to be set by other things.

GTA VI may also get a second shot. IGN notes that the game's multiplayer mode is reportedly due next year, possibly alongside a PC version, which could put it back in contention at The Game Awards 2027. Rockstar hasn't confirmed either the multiplayer timing or a PC release.
For now, the date to watch is November 19, when GTA VI launches.
