Buy GTA
OH NO! - you cry out as you start reading the Sunday news. The news is about GTA again, but unfortunately this time it's not about the release of Grand Theft Auto IV. In an interview with Shacknews, video game market analyst Michael Pachter points out that the agreement between Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar Games expires in February 2009, and in theory Rockstar becomes independent.
And although it's unthinkable that Take-Two wouldn't want to keep the development team responsible for, among other things, the GTA series, millions of dollars could get in the way. Electronic Arts, which recently bought the Pandemic / BioWare pair for 850 million dollars, came up first. It's not unusual for EA to buy up developers and then absorb them, and a GTA franchise would be a very good buy. But fortunately other publishing giants could step in too, like the two main rival console makers, Microsoft and Sony. An exclusive GTA could really boost the sales of either console.
Who will be the final winner? Nobody knows yet, but we REALLY hope it won't be EA, and that we get a new GTA every year. The best thing would be if everything stayed the way it is.
