Official: the next Grand Theft Auto is well into development
Rockstar Games confirmed on its Newswire that active development of the next Grand Theft Auto is well underway. No release date, platforms or setting were given.

Rockstar Games confirmed on the Newswire today, February 4, that the next Grand Theft Auto is in the works. The announcement sits at the very end of a longer GTA Online update, almost as an afterthought.
Active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway.
The studio promises to share more as soon as it is ready, and tells fans to keep an eye on the Rockstar Newswire for official details. It repeated the message on Twitter, adding that its goal with every new project is to "significantly move beyond what we've previously delivered".
Rockstar also pointed to the unprecedented longevity of GTA V as part of the reason for the long gap between full releases. Fair enough, people have been hammering that game for years.
Here is what the statement does not contain:
- a release date,
- platforms,
- a setting,
- any story details.
So the news boils down to this: the game exists, it is being made, and Rockstar is saying so out loud. Nice, though we could handle a bit more. ;)
The same update carried another item: the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of GTA V arrive on March 15, 2022.
Tom's Guide speculates that a teaser trailer could show up at a big gaming show this year, but does not expect the game itself in 2022. That is the outlet's opinion, not Rockstar's.
How long do you think we'll have to wait for the first pictures? Let us know!
