GTA VI Extended Look brought Netflix over 100,000 US sign-ups, says Ampere
Ampere Analysis estimates that the six-hour Netflix exclusive of the GTA VI Extended Look drove more than 100,000 new US sign-ups on August 27. By Ampere's count, that was Netflix's third-biggest sign-up peak of 2026.
The six-hour Netflix exclusive for the Grand Theft Auto VI Extended Look brought in more than 100,000 new sign-ups in the United States on August 27, according to a report from Ampere Analysis published today. These are estimates from a third-party research firm. Neither Netflix nor Rockstar has released any figures.
Ampere ranks the day as Netflix's third-highest sign-up peak of 2026. Over the past year, only two events brought in more new subscribers: the final episode of Stranger Things and the Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano MMA fight. That's a decent result for a service that won't sell a single copy of the game.
The Extended Look is a 27-minute presentation. It was available only on Netflix for six hours before Rockstar released it on other platforms, including its YouTube channel.
Ampere also tracked viewers who had drifted away. More than 5% of US members who hadn't watched anything on Netflix in the previous 30 days came back for the presentation. According to the report, "this reactivation rate was higher than that of any series or movie on Netflix during the measured period."
Katie Holt, a senior research analyst at Ampere, sees the event as a way for Netflix to get into gaming without owning any games: "Trailers, reveals, and adaptations give Netflix a way into gaming culture without owning the games themselves. GTA VI is a particularly powerful example, given the scale of the franchise and the anticipation around its launch."
Louise Wooldridge, a senior research manager at the firm, says the deal works for both companies: "More than 100,000 sign-ups from a six-hour exclusive window shows the pulling power of a major gaming event. For Netflix, it also offers a way to compete with YouTube for gamer attention and to bring lapsed viewers back to the platform. For Rockstar, Netflix opens GTA VI up to audiences beyond the franchise's traditional core."
The new data adds to numbers that were already public. In its first four days the Extended Look got 31.1 million views on Netflix and was the platform's most-viewed title that week. Insider Gaming reports that it was the most-watched video in 87 of 93 countries. GTAVice has pointed to Sensor Tower data showing that US mobile viewing on Netflix rose 35% hour-over-hour during the presentation and that traffic to the Netflix website rose 125%. NielsenIQ reported that UK PlayStation sales rose 33% and Xbox sales 34% around the same time.
The next figure to watch is Netflix's subscriber count at the end of the year. Ampere expects almost 343 million subscribers worldwide by the end of 2026 and estimates that around 16% of them don't play games at all.
