2 News Items About Jack Thompson
Back then (towards the end of April, to be exact) we forgot to report that Take Two Interactive, the publisher of the GTA games among others, won a campaign against "the bogeyman of the gaming world".
The whole story began when Take Two sued Jack, accusing the man of, well, making far too many accusations against the company. Our "beloved" acquaintance, seeing that he could lose big in this lawsuit, decided to steer clear of further threats, suits and accusations, and sat down to negotiate(!!!) with Take 2's executives and lawyers. The negotiations ended successfully from the Florida lawyer's point of view, and the agreement contained the following:
PRO:
-
Jack may not sue Take Two or its subsidiaries (Rockstar included)
-
Jack may not threaten Take Two or its subsidiaries with a lawsuit
-
Jack may not accuse the company of doing anything wrong by selling their games
-
From now on, Jack must always contact the publisher through the company's lawyers
CONTRA:
-
Jack may still (unfortunately or not, everyone can decide for themselves) criticize the games and their content
-
Take Two drops the charges, but maintains them
So it looks like nobody and nothing can stop the release of GTA IV now, not even Jack Thompson himself, who would probably mobilize every force on earth against the game's release if the law allowed it.
A lot has happened since then. Among other things, Jack has found himself a game or two to attack (e.g. HALO), but some negative events have also come his way.
At one court hearing our negative hero, as if at some demonstration, waved around a big banner. Thompson didn't stop even after the judge told him to several times, so the judge interrupted the hearing and then declared:
- I'll let you go make another judge happy...
As a result of this and a dozen other acts, Jack was summoned to court, where the (lucky) judge suspended his license to practice law for 3 months and, what's more, ordered the unlucky lawyer to undergo a psychological evaluation...
