Gameplay
Grand Theft Auto VI is played as Jason and Lucia, a couple on the run you can switch between in an open Leonida: six regions, tiered car theft, robberies, a six-star wanted system, a Criminal Profile and a living world.

Two leads, three kinds of mission
Jason and Lucia are both playable, a couple on the run. In the open world you can switch between them "as open as possible", but the story sometimes blocks switching.
Rob Nelson, co-head of Rockstar North, describes three mission types:
- missions that lock you to one character;
- missions that switch automatically, like the Raul getaway, where Jason shoots while Lucia drives and you then take the wheel as Lucia;
- missions that allow free switching.
What the other one is doing
The character you are not controlling keeps a routine: at the safehouse, out somewhere, in the shower. You can text or call your partner and they travel to you. In a shared car the AI partner can drive while you shoot.

Keeping the relationship going
Holding R2 lets the characters hold hands or kiss. If you don't deepen the relationship you lose those, but effort can restore them. The relationship gives no gameplay benefit and is optional, but it affects how the story plays out. They stay partners in crime for most of the story regardless.
The bond is built through time together, such as a game of pool, mini golf, a beach walk or a robbery done as a pair. Ignoring the partner's goodnight text can affect your relationship a bit.

The phone is a physical object in the world. Snapmatic is browse-and-follow only because the pair are fugitives, though photos can be sent to the partner. Confirmed apps include WAINK, Ryde Me and Scooter Bros.
Six regions, and a map bigger than GTA V's
The official site lists six regions: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park.
There is no official figure in square kilometres. Nelson says the map is about three times RDR2's playable area and about twice GTA V's.

Wind affects boats, aircraft can take damage in storms and pedestrians shelter from rain. The day-night cycle is substantially longer than GTA V's, with no exact length given. Aaron Garbut said there are "an order of magnitude more interiors" than in earlier games.
The game has more than 600,000 animations, against 55,000 in GTA V and 300,000 in RDR2. Nelson's February 2026 playthrough took about 80 hours.
Narrower roads, real traffic jams, tiered car theft
Nelson says the driving has "the best parts of the weightiness and feel of GTA 4, but... the accessibility of GTA 5". Roads are narrower and more realistic with denser traffic, so traffic jams happen. Personal vehicles are capped at three early on, and extra garages can be bought.
Every vehicle has a fuel gauge and an engine-health readout. Nelson says refuelling is a quick interaction of about 10 seconds, so "you can't complain about that".
There are other ways to get around. The Scooter Bros app delivers your car for a fee, Ryde Me works as fast travel, and buses and trains run on routes. There is also the Shitzu Squalo boat.

Car theft is tiered. A phone scanner (WAINK) shows a car's value, registration cost, lock, alarm and tracker. Older cars open with a slim jim or lock picks, luxury cars need a key cloner obtained later, and breaking a window sets off the alarm. You cannot steal cars in the safe zones around safehouses and certain story locations.
Rob first, bank it before you get Busted
Some story missions require you to raise money first. You can earn by boosting and fencing cars and by hitting gang compounds. You can rob stores, gas stations, jewelry stores, pawn shops, payday loan places and small banks.
Robberies can be done alone or as a pair. Mechanics include finding safe combinations, a snap gun to pick locks quietly, and destroying cameras and disabling alarms. A safe opens with its combination, or with explosives, which damage the loot.

The gang info on the map shows hideouts and how much cash and drugs each one holds. A bank account and banking app exist alongside cash on hand. The reason to use them: if either character is arrested it is "Busted" followed by a respawn, and you lose all cash on hand when Busted or Wasted, so it should be banked.
Six stars, and the cops know what you wear
The wanted system goes up to six stars, the first six-star system since Chinatown Wars. A crime is only reported if someone sees it or an alarm goes off. Stars do not rise easily early on, and one star is easy to escape.
On-screen "Heat" icons show what the police know about you: a person silhouette (description), a clothes hanger (clothing), a camera (CCTV), a vehicle and a couple.
A Focus mode, like RDR2's Eagle Eye, highlights items and cops.
Ways to lose heat:
- ditch the known car;
- split up Jason and Lucia;
- change your full outfit;
- drop your weapon;
- remove your mask;
- leave the heat area;
- respray at Pay 'n' Spray.
Hats, glasses and haircuts alone are not enough. Masks keep your face out of the police report, even when CCTV catches you.

Advanced trackers ping police if you drive slowly, and fences can remove them. Damage lowers a car's fence value, and Pay 'n' Spray repairs, resprays and registers cars.
Stinger strips, K9 dogs that pin you down and helicopter searchlights have been shown. Trackers in stolen cars report your position, and owners can report car thefts.

The Criminal Profile: angel or devil, and the world notices
A new Criminal Profile system resembles but differs from Red Dead Redemption 2's Honor system. It runs from "Professional" to "Irredeemable" with angel and devil icons. It is separate from the relationship system.
It moves when you go beyond what is necessary, consistently. Required mission crimes, robberies and self-defence are "fair game". It affects how the story unfolds and makes the world more aggressive towards aggressive players, with no RDR2-style store discounts.
Shoot the gun out of their hand
Your arsenal lives in your personal vehicle's trunk and in Ammu-Nation lockers, and guns can be kept in any car's trunk. Nelson says you can carry two concealed handguns and up to two long guns, one on your back and one in hand, both visible. People react to a gun in your hands, much less to one slung on your back. Weapon customization has more options than ever, with store-exclusive guns.
Combat options include:
- shooting limbs to incapacitate;
- shooting weapons out of hands;
- suppressive fire to pin enemies;
- shooting tires to flip police cars;
- aiming without firing to defuse a confrontation.
A yellow X marks a downed NPC.
Sleep tracking, gym muscle and thousands of outfits
Safehouses work like RDR2 camps, are shared and interactive, and change by story chapter. Jason's first house is in the Leonida Keys.

At home you can only trim or shave your hair. Salons and barbers offer signature styles. Rockstar says there are thousands of outfits, and clothing stores stock unique items. Named places and jobs you can visit or take on:
- the Rideout Customs customization shop and One-Eyed Willie's, an off-road shop
- the Paradise Garage, with a weapon locker and stolen-goods storage
- Electric Fang tattoos (50+)
- Sara's Salon
- a Classic Car Collection job for Wyman
- a raid on the PTT Youngin$ compound
Body stats such as health, cardio and fitness are tracked. Gyms raise muscle and strength, overeating adds weight, and muscle fades if not maintained. Nelson says a health app tracks sleep, which affects how fast some attributes regenerate.

Local storms, NPCs with a memory and 170-plus animal species
Weather: clouds move independently, storms are local, puddles persist and rainbows appear. Tropical storms and hurricanes exist.
NPCs have traits such as temperament and aggression, and remember what they have seen and how you treated them. Their heights and builds vary, with animations retargeted on the fly. A Los Angeles team of writers and directors works on the NPCs.
There are more than 170 animal species, including over 60 bird types and over 30 land mammals, with Rare, Discoverable and Legendary animals that can be tracked.

The pastimes and side activities confirmed so far are pool, mini golf, kayaking, zoo visits, scuba diving, parachuting, the gym, studying animals, petting dogs, beach walks, shopping, robberies together, fishing, cycling and NPC street-race challenges.
One thing did not make it: a grocery-shopping system for restocking the fridge was cut, Nelson says.

Rockstar says there are more radio and in-game TV ads than ever. Six radio stations were previewed on the official music page: Cocoteo, Back Country, Afro Bank FM, The Chamber, Flash FM and Dirty South Classics, plus podcasts and talk radio.
PS5 Pro enhanced, PS4 not at all
The Ultimate Edition is marked "PS5 Pro Enhanced" and "Offline play only", for 1 player. PS5 features:
- Tempest 3D Audio
- SSD near-instant load times
- haptic feedback
- adaptive triggers
- controller speaker effects
The game is not playable on PS4. Pre-loading starts on November 10, and the download is up to 212 GB.
What we don't know yet
- Ending the romance: whether you can end the relationship is open. One report says you can't dump your partner, while Nelson is quoted as saying "it's yours to keep or yours to lose", and he "refuses to confirm or deny" marriage.
- Map and length: no square-kilometre figure, no exact day-night length, and the 80-hour playthrough may cover the story plus some optional goals or the main campaign alone.
- Storms: how often hurricanes and tropical storms happen, and how they affect gameplay, is not stated.
- Money laundering: not confirmed.
- Monetization: Nelson reportedly said there are "no monetizations", but the ESRB notice on Rockstar's site lists "In-Game Purchases" and the PlayStation Store says "In-game purchases optional".
- Frame rate: Nelson reportedly said the consoles run the game at 30fps for now, with a 60fps option still open. Nothing official covers Xbox Series S or PS5 Pro performance.
- Leaks and fan lists: leaked footage showed a taser, a healing drug called "Zombix" and a melee stamina meter, fan lists claim features like a metro, body dragging and 700 interiors, and the BuckMe and WhatUp apps are rumours too. Rockstar has confirmed none of these.
